Despite being larger than Asheville, Charlotte has a surprisingly small amount of oddball places. Let’s explore, shall we?
A musical parking garage?
The 7th street parking garage holds an “urban musical instrument” by artist and architect Christopher Janney. It’s nine stories tall, and supposedly has a ‘ghost’ in the building that will automatically play on the building’s blue and purple rectangles. Touch the red fins to play some music for yourself, and look for the plaque on the side of the building for a riddle. Figure out the solution and you’ll create quite a show of light and sound.

A giant, rotating head?
Head to David Černý’s Metalmorphosis — pronounce it CHAIR-nee, by the way — this metal head by a famous Czech artist sports seven segments, each of which rotates a full 360 degrees. When aligned, they form a human head, but when not aligned…? It almost looks like Picasso’s having a field day — distorted features and gaping holes.

A big dang rock?
Native Americans called this area a campsite and lookout post for generations, and would have been a major landmark. They’re the biggest exposed boulders in the county, and considering they’re in the middle of a residential neighborhood, they’re also pretty quiet. Amble up the rocks or just enjoy the peace and quiet.

Stop and smell the roses
OK, so this last destination isn’t as weird, but it could easily be considered offbeat. The McGill Rose Garden got its start in the mid-20th century and 500 rose bushes, and originally was only open to the public on Mother’s Day. If you’re able to schedule your visit, make it a priority from April to November, with May and June being ideal. It’s free to enter, which makes it an even sweeter smell.
