Jaco is in the south-west of Costa Rica and the town itself is known for great surfing beaches and vibrant nightlife. Jaco is also a great gateway to some of the country’s national parks, including Carara National Park where you’re likely to find scarlet macaws and crocodiles. If you’re more about the landscapes and backdrops than the animals themselves – no problem. There’s a great trek in Pura Vida Park which leads you all the way to Bijagual Waterfall and the surrounding canyon!

Puerto Viejo

For scuba divers, there are coral reefs in Cahuita National Park, and you can even dive in a shipwreck! The area also boasts a jaguar rescue centre, where the big cats are rehabilitated.
